DIVREI TORAH ON PARSHAS KEDOSHIM
This Parsha begins with the words Kedoshim Ti’yu, that people should become holy. How do people become holy? The Ramban says it requires people to be M’kadish Atzmom B’mutor Lochem. People should make themselves holy by distancing themselves from acts that are permitted. He offers examples such as eating too much, or insisting on exotic foods. The same would apply to any permissible action that’s done in excess.

Rav Moshe Feinstein, in Igros Moshe, explains this Mitzvoh in a manner which may be easier for people to appreciate. (Many people are uncomfortable with being advised not to do something that they are allowed to do.)

Even though people have to do the same Mitzvohs, they have individual Nisyonos (tests). Some find keeping kosher difficult; others find being honest difficult. Those personal Nisyonos become the individual’s personal life goals.

The Mitzvoh of Kidoshim Ti’yu is for people to recognize their Nisoyonos. Once they do, they must overcome them through planning. The Mitzvoh tells people that distancing themselves from anything that they find difficult will help them.

People that have problems with stealing should never go into a store alone. Those that have problems with looking at unhealthy internet sites, should not allow themselves internet access. Some people shouldn’t have internet cell phones, as it can cause them to waste hours each day. The Mitzvoh of Kidoshim Tiyu is a tool for personal growth in areas that individuals need help.

Kedoshim Tiyu is a personal Mitzvoh, one that each individual must decide how to apply to their personal life.
